2nd European IRPA Congress

The Second European International Radiation Protection Association (IRPA) Congress to be held in Paris, from May 15th to May 19th 2006, will be organised by the French Society for Radiation Protection (SFRP). This European Congress, a global forum on the Radiation Protection field, will be a unique opportunity to present papers on and debate about all those subjects which will determine the future of this speciality, ranging from the scientific data and questions about biological radiation effects, to the regulation and practice of radiation protection. This includes the control of exposure to natural radiation, to professional and medical radiations, the evolution of the radiological protection system, the protection against non-ionising radiation and the participation of the public with respect to more sensitive questions. This multidisciplinary approach, which covers a broad panel of skills, gives us the opportunity to propose you a “Radiation Protection: from Knowledge to Action” tour.

2nd Asian and Oceanic IRPA Congress

The Second Asian and Oceanic Congress Radiological Protection (AOCRP-2) will be held in Beijing, China, from 9th to 13th October 2006. The Congress will be hosted by Chinese Society of Radiation Protection (CSRP), Chinese Nuclear Society, Chinese Society for Environmental Society (CSES), Chinese Medical Association (CMA), China Preventive Medicine Association (CPMA), and China isotope & Radiation Association (CIRA) under full support of Chinese Government, the International Radiation Protection Association (IRPA) and Asian and Oceanic Association for Radiation Protection (AOARP). This congress will continue to provide the opportunity for worldwide distinguished scientists and professionals of the radiation protection society to strengthen the mutual exchange of invaluable experiences and recently gained knowledge in the course of radiation protection practices.

Sievert Award - IRPA 12

Professor SievertInvitations have been sent to Associate Society Presidents requesting nominations for the Sievert Award to be presented at the 12th International Congress in 2008. A nominee must be a person who has made outstanding contributions to radiation protection, but who is not a current member of the Executive Council or the Sievert Award Selection Committee. Nominations must be accompanied by a supporting statement to justify the nomination, a CV and other supporting documentation, and be sent to the Vice-President of IRPA as chairman of the Sievert Award Selection Committee by 15 October 2006.

International Conference on the Safety and Security of Radioactive Sources: Towards a Global System for the Continuous Control of Sources throughout their Life Cycle, Bordeaux, France - 27 June - 1 July 2005

Report to IRPA Executive Council

Background

This conference, which was organized by the IAEA in co-operation with a number of international organizations and hosted by the Government of France, was the latest in a series that included Dijon in 1998, Buenos Aires in 2000, and Vienna in 2003. There were over 300 participants from 64 IAEA Member States. Details regarding the conference can be seen on the IAEA's web site.

IRPA Participation

At the invitation of the IAEA, the IRPA was requested to be a co-operating organization at this conference and thereby make a presentation at the opening ceremony. The President of IRPA appointed the Treasurer, Brian Dodd, to fulfill this role because of his long standing work in this field as well as his association with the IAEA. Other IRPA Executive Council members who attended the conference were Vice-President for Congress Affairs, Abel González, and Renate Czarwinski. Past President Geoff Webb also made a presentation on the opening day. The IRPA logo was on all of the publicity material for the conference including the posters, banners and proceedings.

A copy of Brian Dodd's opening remarks, which were limited to 5 minutes, is attached in Appendix I of this report.

Conference report

The Findings of the conference are attached in Appendix II. Dr. Dodd will also be submitting a more detailed report of the conference to the U.S. Health Physics Society's Operational Radiation Safety for consideration for publication and will copy it to the Executive Council. Suffice it to say that the conference was very successful and it was very encouraging to see the amount of progress that was being made around the world in efforts to control sources, particularly in implementing the Code of Conduct on the Safety and Security of Radioactive Sources.

IRPA Matters

Since members of many of the IRPA Associated Societies were present at the conference, the Treasurer took the opportunity to follow up with a number of countries who had not yet paid their 2005 dues. In addition, he also interacted with participants from some countries whose Societies were struggling. Several of these are making significant efforts to revitalize.

Conclusions

As stated in the opening remarks, it was important for IRPA officers and members to be present at this conference and to help develop the Findings, because they are the ones who are most likely to be responsible for implementing them. In addition, the Treasurer and other EC members were able to take the opportunity to pursue IRPA matters with individuals regarding dues and their associated societies during the conference. Hence, it was regarded as quite important and beneficial for IRPA to have a presence at this conference.
